Organizations With Secret Membership Are Barred by Senate Ruling.
Sentiment Among Students and Faculty Against Klan is Strong.
Members of the new Ku Klux Klan which is being organized in the University of Nebraska will strike a snag almost before its organization is complete according to university authorities. In 1909 a freshman political organization with a secret membership was officially banned from the university by the following rule that was passed by the university senate:
"Section 1. No student of the university shall retain membership in any society, fraternity or organization in the university whose membership is secret, concealed or not made public in the usual way."
"Section 4. Any student convicted of violating any of the provisions of section 1 shall be suspended or expelled from the university. Any conduct on the part of the members of the teaching or official bodies of the university clearly tending to support or encouragestudents in the violation of that section shall be deemed an inpropriety." Passed by a unanimous vote of the university senate April 29, 1909.
The reason for passing the rule was an organization that had become to the university, according to university authorities, whose membership was concealed.
Sentiment against the newly organized K. K. K. is strong among both the students and faculty of the university and it is expected that action will be taken against it as the organization is in direct violation of one of the rules of the university.
A statement issued by the organizers of the Ku Klux Klan that the organization would not in any way conflict with the university authorities is erroneous since it is being formed in violation of the rules of the university.
