Description

This article sheds some more light on the Beer Apartment Raid. Note the mention of the "bootlegger" who left the apartment right before the raid. Also, note that the students said they were treated "squarely" after their meeting with Dean Thompson. There is no mention whether Hokuf believed he was treated squarely.

SUSPEND SIX UNI. STUDENTS
Steve Hokuf Included in Group Expelled After Liquor Raid.
Police Made Call After Report Received of Disturbance.
The suspension from the University of Nebraska of the "several young men discovered in an apartment in which it was apparent liquor was being manufactured" and "the young men responsible for the rental of the apartment and associated with the incident" was announced Wednesday noon by T. J. Thompson, dean of men.
The dean's statement which mentioned no names of students follows:
"Last Saturday several young men were discovered in an apartment in which it was apparent liquor was being manufactured. I have satisfied myself they were not making liquor for sale; however, the young men responsible for the rental of the apartment and those associated with the incident are being suspended from the University of Nebraska.

Six Students Suspended.
Although no names are mentioned in the statement the students who called at the dean's office Wednesday morning and to whom the statement was read included Steve Hokuf, Crete; George Cook, Casper, Wyo.; Warren Crawford, Lake City, Ia,; Fred Wickman, Tekamah; Jack Calkins, York; Max Von Bargen, Lincoln.
It is understood the suspension order will be lifted with the beginning of the 1931-1932 collegiate year and that the boys will be granted permission to return to school next fall.
In giving out the statement Dean Thompson declared the [sic] had urged the boys to register for extension work and that they had taken the notification very gracefully.
Following the conference with the dean of men Hokuf admitted he had been suspended from school but declared he planned to re-enter next fall. The ruling will make Hokuf ineligible for football competition next fall.
Police Told of Disturbance.
Police Wednesday denied that they believed the apartment just across the street from the western boundary of the campus had been maintained as a bootlegging headquarters. Officers declared that the place had been reportde [sic] the night preceding the day of the raid, when a telephone call informed police that a disturbance was in progress there.
Detective Frank Weygint, on of the three officers who raided the apartment Saturday, stated that re-
