On the 22nd of June we | , ey 3 7 | 2
drove to Sowbelly Canyon, 7 | me a | )
miles east of Monroe, reach-
ing it by driving up Monroe
to the ridge and following
& this to the upper reaches of
the desired canyon. It is
impossible to reach it vie
‘ Tiet Creek Valley excent by
& much longer drive, as the
water courses from the in-
tervening canyons cut deep
gulehes far out into the
valley. The head of each
of these canyons, as shown
in the accompanying photograph, |
is characterized by the out-
eropping of rocky areas.

Sowbelly Canyon is broader then any of the others, and is quite fertile,
many smug little farms being tucked sway between its walls. It is also one
of the most beautiful of the canyons, its east wall particularly standing
out against the sky with a magnificent series of pineclad buttes. TIts
handsome name dates back to the days of the Sioux wars, when a body of sol- .
diers was corralled here by the Indians and held in a stete of siege and
trepidation, their sole rations being bacon. When this occurred, or how,
many soldiers were involved, or how long the siege lasted, or how it was
raised, are trivial points which the inhabitants have not looked into,
since they beer no relation to crops or cattle. A surprising ignorance
of local history was encountered wherever we tried to get data of this
character throughout the summer, and such "facts" as we did get were so
a cue thet I have not used them.
