Dear Shoemaker,
Yours of the 18th recieved and am much
disappointed ~ what can have happened to make a change in
your plans necessary? This would be our last chance for a trip
this year ~ when you get back from the coast it will be too late.
Cannot you postpone the letter to N. O. U members and slip
it in edgeways, even if you have to do it at odd times on your
journey? It was bad enough to have to give up coming up to
Omaha and now to have to give up your coming down ~ its
too much to ask of a man and, hang it, if I knew how to do
so, I feel as if I'd like to _make you come anyway_. Better
reconsider and come down ~ have a lot to show you and tell
you, and Sunday is almost sure to be a fine day ~ with all the
September species out. There must be time in the next six
weeks to write N. O. U. letters.
Was simply obliged to stay at home Monday ~ recieved a
telegram that morning that a female subject was being ship-
ped to me in not the best condition, had to stay right here
till it came, which was not till 6 PM. yesterday - Tuesday,
I worried over "her" ~ embalming ~ from 7.30 to 11:30 last night.
As to publication, Swank now is planning to get out an
annual ~ another "Proceedings" ~ this winter. A quarterly seems
out of the question ~ he hasn't the time ~ and who has? He has
worked hrad all summer on a "Report of the State Entomologist"
for Bruner, and I know hasn't had much extra time. Right
in here I could write several pages of University gossip, but
shall not. Suffice it to say that Swank may have charge of
the courses in Ornithology this winter under me Will tell you
"all about it" when I see you.
