Omaha, Nebraska, Jan. 28, 1906.
Dear Wolcott:
Your letter of January 12 - 18 was duly received, and I hope the run of hard luck
of which ittold has turned down another street. You certainly had your share of trouble
for a while, and I am anxious to hear that more favorable conditions prevail.
I think you got my letter about labels the same day I received your letter enclosing
the sample of photograph labels. The scheme is very good for odd locations, but at any
point where more than two or three dozen specimens are taken I should by all means
have the label photo-engraved, for I prefer the print to the typewriting, from an
aesthetic standpoint, by a large majority; in fact, I have always thought that the man
who formulated the typewriter alphabet laid himself out to destroy every shade of
symmetry and grace, and that not only he went for to do it, but that he went and done it,
begobs, and done it so well that he should have a monument placed over him, dead or alive.
Photo-engraving will prove less expensive, also, if time is taken into account. I am
waiting for your list of locations, and the first or next Sunday after it is received I shall
get your "copy" in order for the reducing process - unless you have fallen in love with
the photo labels, in which case we shall quarrel dreadfully.
Thank you for the information regarding the annual meeting, though some of it
causes me a cramp. It seems we are destined to act like a pack of kids when we try to
print anything in Nebraska. First "The Hummer" and then "The Kite" - ye gods, what a
name! And if our policy in publication be to make the first number "as large as the
funds will allow," I wonder how large the fourth quarterly issue won't be, and what
date it will bear.
All of which has not the slightest bearing upon the fact that on January 28, 1906,
with a temperature of 38 to 45 degrees between 11 and 1 o'clock, I pranced out to the
