Omaha, April 12, 1905.
My dear Wolcott :
Your letter of the 4th was awaiting me on my return April
6th, and interested me very much. I hope it will be my good
fortune to be in Omaha at the time Mr. Knaus makes his trip ; if
you can arrange for a Sunday on the Salt Basin - a nice dry
Sunday, please, such as we did not have once - I shall certainly
be with you. I am perfectly ravenous for tiger beetles, and
want half a thousand each of fulgida and togata, not to mention
a few hundreds of each of the other species to be found on that
wonderful Salt Basin.
While I was in San Francisco I was handed a copy of Mr.
Knaus's translation of Walther Horn's letters relating to his
recent trip in this country, dealing almost exclusively with
Cicindelidae, and found them very interesting. Have you read
them ? I intend to get a copy from Mr. Knaus if he has any
left for sale.
I had a most delightful evening with Dr. Van Dyke in
San Francisco, hovering over his collection until midnight.
You should know him, and I told him all the bad things about
you which came to mind. He reminds me of you in many ways -
his enthusiasm, his closely reasoned theories of relationship
of genera, geographical distribution, etc., and in other ways
which I will not cite for fear it might spoil you. He gave
me some excellent specimens - Cicindela oregona, haemorrhagica, senilis,
bellissima, and eureka, and Omus californicus, also a specimen
of var. rugipennis of O. sequoiarum which he dug up in Placer
County.
I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with O. californicus
on Twin Peaks. They were not numerous ; in fact, I collected but
three ; but I was pleased to see an Omus alive and get an idea of
its movements and action. I collected quite a number of various
beetles there and on Mt. Tamalpais.
Van Dyke placed my Yuma tiger beetle, and you will be disappointed
to learn that it is hirticollis. I am sorry to have
led you to believe that I had something out of the ordinary.
In Van Dyke's collection I found two specimens from Nebraska
concerning which you may or may not be pleased to have data ; it
occurred to me that they might be new locations for the species :
C. denverensis, Benkelman, Neb., May 18, 1903 ; C. limbata, Imperial,
Neb., no date.
So far I have found only C. splendida and C. repanda here
this spring.
All right ; we'll go after the Scarabs.
Can you conveniently give me a list of Eloides [Eleodes] in your collection
and that of the Uni., taken in Nebraska ? Any old time.
Don't know whether I care to dig out an ant hill or not.
Will see later.
Best wishes to all.
