Lincoln Oct 31 - 97.
Dear Lawrence,
I will try to write today with the children all leaning around me, and baby climbing in chairs. That is her latest fad now, to climb on every thing she comes to. You would not know her if you were to see her. She is no longer a [?]. Today is cold and I had to write out where there is a [?] and did not dare bring out here for fear it would be tipped over. Hope you can read this pencil.
I did not hear from you for exactly three weeks and finally yesterday recieved the letter you wrote on board the steamer
