30 21 Mr. & Mrs. Joe Hanser - Kriscaiders near Ankeny's fine ranch. June 1 Started for Ellsworth from Mumper with the Stan Man. Yucca continues numerous and the rough condition of the hills prevails for several miles farther north to about Pawlet where Andropogon scoparius again appears and the Yucca rapidly loses the impatance so noticeable about the lakes and the head of Blue Creek. There is much swampy land here and numerous lakes, some of them large. The lakes usually show a wide belt (20-100 ft) of Distichlis spicata . They are all alkaline. From Pawlet on in to Ellsworth the hills are more as they are in the northeast - i.e. Bunch-grass controlls the uplands and Yucca is decidedly secondary. The ranges of hills are also much more pronounced here than farther south, the county on the whole resembling Cherry Co. except that the valleys are not nearly so wide. The Carex pensylvanica society is developed in fine degree here - the species making up the bulk of the "grass" vegetation on the "middle lands" at this season. Society of Aragalus lambertii , Penstemon accuminatus
