3 … east side …. this case accomplish something, when cows and chickens and a garden and ice could be cared for and profited by without adding to the force of the men, and furthermore would almost certainly effect a considerable saving in the year’s table expenses. When we went to get cots from the second floor of the bunk house we found dozens of Cimex lectularia [cimex lectularius, common bedbug] executing maneuvers in the folds thereof. Fortunately, it is their nature to react negatively to light, and a thorough sunning of the cots, aided by microscopically careful manual extraction, resulted in the possession of usable beds, which we moved far away. A tent was furnished us and we set it up midway between the main building and the bunk house. I slept there for a night or two, but it did not appeal to me very strongly, as I prefer to take my fresh air straight; so I hied me to the hills, having acquired a penchant for sky bed-rooms
