18 size. I could not bear to leave them & only wish I could find a present-day teacher
to give me lessons. When was free, he ran off with us to his house & the botanical garden. The setting for
these is lovely: great avenues of majestic linden trees in full bloom- lovely shrubbery
& flowers. The botanic garden itself is small, but as F. [] says, a "gem." was in his element, pointing at things of interest & rattling off a steady, rapid
stream, of comment. It is lucky we are able to understand so well, as he does most
of the talking, & I make most of the necessary p replies for our part. I have received many compliments on my ability to speak- some
of them rather dubious- however. For instance a man in the pension told me I spoke better German than he did English. I mischievously asked
how well he spoke English. He replied "not at all"! I don't believe he realizes yet
what that statement did to his evidently seriously meant compliment.
