we found sparingly in the bad lands on other tri
our best opportunity for collecting them, and w

getting fifty or more.
They were found over an
aree 50 yards wide and 200
yards long, bordering a _
dense growth of Symphor#-
carpas, the soil of this
region having been worked
over pretty thoroughly by
pocket gophers the previous
year. On the bare patches
where the sovher hills had
been washed down, and among
the scattered growth of
srasses and milkweeds, we
found the beetles. They
indulged in rather short
flights, but were hard to
see and sufficiently active
to make their capture dif-
ficult. The same species

tory series. - .In the late afternoon of the sane day Dr. Woleott and I
took a walk out Monroe Creek, following it for five miles, on a trout-
fishing expedition, but it was exasperating work, for the creek was densely
overgrown at almost every point, and it was only at intervals that we could
find space to drop a line - casting being entirely out of the question.
Ye did not succeed brilliantly, but finally sot a "mess" - a delightfully
flexible word. - During the evening of Jun
with a like degree of moderste success.
On June 25th we went to Kiel's
rench, a mile and a half out in the
vailey, to collect a wonderfully
varied lot of coecinellid beetles
("ledy-birds") which Dr. Voleott
hee located on a previous trip.
fhey were found on the leaves of
the box elders, and the veriety
wes amazing - at least a dozen
species, and generally each spe-
cies showing a greet range of
veriation. A peculiar feature
of their distribution was its
sharp definition; though there
were box elders in all directions,
end the conditions epparently the
same throughout, the beetles were
confined to a given area. Many
