that Transition conditions

are to be found if anywhere
the state, but it is too

early to decide this point.

The roed is delightfully e

bad, with sharp turns and

steen climbs end descents

and bad bridges; low

branches and dense over-

hanging masses of vines

kept us ducking for our

lives. Less blase road-

sters than Fill and Sorrel

would have gone crazy and

run away, but they under-

stood their business en

} EE. RR i | o stuck to it. We drove up

eee ee - the canyon for about two
miles, where we camped and had lunch, after which each acquitted hinself
according to his desire - Leussler and Dawson following the valley in
search of butterflies, Pool and Williams visiting the high points for
plants, and Dr. Woleott and I confining our attention chiefly to the lowest
and dampest regions in seerch of beetles. we got a fine series of the
beautiful Cychrus elevatus, collecting thirty or more, whereas my entire
previous takings about Omaha dnd Lineoin had been about eight specimens.
The specimens here were much darker than those I had seen previously.
In one deep gulch, only a few yards above the level of the valley, we
found numerous bones of bison, navi one well preserved skull. I took
numerous photographs of high points and attractive vistas. The day vassed
too quickly, and it is a tonbediok to go into detail about certain points
of interest. Well uo the eanyon we found evidence of beaver work in
past years, and on the See we followed Warbonnet Creek far out into
Hat Creek Valley to se , eg: hats
their more recent nae
but as this subject was
given special attention
on our trip to this re-
sion in August, when
numerous photographs
were taken, I leave the
entire matter for pre-
sentation in the August
notes.
