My dear Shoemaker,
Your kind note of May 25 came to me in
Lincoln as I was making my preparations to come here, and
the letter of the 6th was forwarded to me, with the lists. This last
was a very happy thought on your part and very neatly execut-
ed. Those two days were both very happy days for me and I hope
we may have many such outings in the future.
I have a confession to make in regard to the tiger-beetle
paper. When I came to clean up my desk before leaving Lincoln
I found the order there which in some way I had failed to
mail and which had become buried in the pile of unanswer-
ed letters, reports, and so forth. It has now been sent and you
will probably recieve your paper in due time. Do not for a day
fail to remember that in August you are coming down to Lin-
coln to work over the tiger-beetles with me when I put my paper
on the tiger-beetles of Nebraska in shape, and do not fail to
gather a goodly number wherever you may have the opportunity,
against that time. You are welcome to the cyanide bottle and
the boxes and am very glad you have them.
Shall be here for the next six weeks, or until about Aug. 4.
Have collected a few nice specimens but so far only two species
of tiger-beetles, pex-guttata and patruela. Have seen these birds:
Quail. | Phoebe. |
Dove. | Wood Pewee. |
Turkey Buzzards. | Prairie Horned Lark. |
Red-tailed Hawk. | Blue Jay. |
Screech Owl. | Crow. |
Yellow-billed Cuckoo. | Cowbirds. |
Kingfisher. | Meadow lark. |
Hairy Woodpecker. | Orchard Oriole. |
Downy " | Baltimore " |
Red-headed " | Bronzed Grackle. |
Red-bellied " | Grasshopper Sparrow. |
Northern Flicker. | Chipping " |
Chimney Swift. | Field " |
Kingbird. | Cardinal. |
Crested Flycatcher. | Rose-breasted Grosbeak. |
Indigo Bird. | Northern Yellowthroat. |
Dickcissel. | Yellow-breasted Chat. |
Summer Tanager (nest). | Catbird. |
Purple Martin. | Brown Thrasher. |
Bank Swallow. | Western House Wren. |
Red-eyed Vireo. | White-bellied Nuthatch. |
Warbling " | Tufted Titmouse. |
Blue-winged Warbler. | Chickadee. |
Yellow Warbler. | Wood Thrush. |
Sycamore " | Robin. |
Kentucky " | Bluebird. |
Louisiana Water-Thrush. |
The omissions here are more striking than the list itself. The
Sycamore Warbler, and Summer Tanager are new birds to me.
Shall be very glad to hear again from you, and wish
you the best of luck on your trip this time.
Very sincerely, your friend,
Robt. H. Wolcott.
