Lincoln, Oct. 9, 1901,

My dear Shoemaker,

Yours with cuts came promptly and in accordance
with your suggestion have put in the plates with the
uniform inscription - "Nest of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird."
Have combined into Plates (II to IV) nos. 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6 respectively ~
7 is of such shape [small bird drawing] that it does not make a good-looking
plate, being too long to look well placed either cross-wise or length-wise
as well as too small to take up a whole plate. What do you
think of its use as a "tail-piece" to your article?

Miss van Sant's cuts seem also a little too small to each take
a page so have combined them into three plates (V to VII). If we had
plenty of money should use your other cut referred to as a "tail-piece"
"for one plate, and make each cut of Miss van Sants' article
one, - and may yet, when we come to look at the proofs -- but it would
cost about $6.- more. I wish to have your opinion - please express
your desires frankly. Feel that since you donated the plates the Union
ought not to economize on the printing in such a way as to cause
them to lose in beauty by the make-up.

In addition to these plates there is the Chimney Swift Tree as Frontis-
piece and Prof. Barbour's plate of the diseased bird's feet.
We expect to have the Proceedings out next week. The list of members
shows -    active        62
                  associate  37
honorary    14      total 103, up to Oct. 1.

Several others have said "When you get your pamphlet out, will want
to see it" and many of these will join. I am thinking of sending a
circular letter to bird men in Ioa., Kans., Col., and S. Dak. for associate
members - the totals ought to be by our next meeting, 75 and 75, giving
us about $110.- to print on. For I expect next year we will have to do
it alone.

With regards to Miss van Sant and yourself,
Very truly,
Robt. H. Wolcott

Shall be very glad to see those prints.
