Wisner, Nebr, Sep. 13, 1897.
Dear Lawrence:
You see by the heading that I am at Wisner. My school began a week ago today. I have the 4th and 5th grades or children from nine to twelve years old. There are thirty six in my room. Some of the children are lovely and again there are others that are exceedingly annoying. As I have never taught before it is quite hard. I suppose when I get used to it, things will go better; at least, so I hope. I am staying at Pranitz's only a block and a half from the school, very convenient, especially

in cold and stormy weather. I will get $45 a month. My board and room is $14 a month. I expect to have about $160 left in June after my expenses are paid and some of my debts. Last week seemed very very long, longer than any week I remember, unless it was when I was little and counted the days before Christmas. I suppose the time will go faster when I get accustomed to the work. The other teachers are very pleasant and nice, and everyone that I've met so far seems nice, so that is pleasant. I expect to go home every

several weeks. I will go home next Saturday morning and come back Sunday evening. If Lillie and Ellie drove up for me, as I would like to have them, they will come Friday, will visit my school and then after school, we'll go home. Dr DeBell bought a fine carriage and keeps it at the livery at West Point so that when his family want to they can go riding.

I must stop now and eat breakfast. I will finish your letter after school this evening.

I am now at my room again. This was teacher's meeting evening, and

so I didn't get out till late. I wish I had an organ for you know I cannot sing. I'm going to try to get an organ then it will be easier to teach the children new songs. Lawrence, I want to have a bird day some Friday next spring. I want to have two whole hours about birds. I think I'll have a general description about Nebraska birds, giving number, importance, etc. Then we'll have recitations about birds, bird songs, etc. Can you give any suggestions too?

If you can, I would be very glad for them. Miss Knoll, the teacher of the next lower room is going to join me in the exercises. We will emphasize the importance of birds, economic, aesthetic, etc.

I really think I will like teaching when I get well started. But oh indeed, I was tired the first two or three days. I have taught only six day, but it seems as many weeks. You must get homesick too though you are busy. I would like to

see you sometimes so far away in Spanish land. I really didn't want to come, but I thought perhaps I wouldn't get a school and was looking for something someplace and so forth.
Miss Tremain gave Marcia a paper with an article in it concerning you and a certain Senor Huego. I translated it and sent a copy to Marcia. How strange the Journal notices are! I kept the paper for a curiosity. Is there much of a modern Spanish literature in that country, that is — good literature? Probably

not, though as the language there maybe more or less [?] Spanish.

Kenelm will start in at the University this week. Five others from West Point will be freshmen. Lily M. left last week. Phoneta got home from the claims only last week — You must remember I mean only the first part of Sep- and her school begins today, Sep. 13. She hated to leave the boys as they had a good deal of work to do. I would like to keep house for the boys. Maybe I will some time.

I wrote a letter to the boys yesterday and enclosed your letter. I know they will be glad to get it. Strange it is, isn't it, how we all are separated, but, my dear brother, we think no less of one another, nor care for one another no less — perhaps we feel the kinder. I know that no one has a better mother and father than I or dearer brothers and sisters.

I have a key-box at the post-office, for I expect a good deal of mail. I'll hear from home, from Ella, and get the college paper, the Northwestern Journal of Education,

and then other mail. I expect to find some letters this evening when I mail these letters I've written. I hope to hear from Eva O'Sullivan. She began to teach at Creighton the same day I began.

I'm going to have a watch, a good Waterbury or some such kind. I need one teaching.

We are going to have ice-cream for supper, the first I've had for a long time. I don't know whether you get any in Argentina or not.

I'll not tell you the Lincoln news as you no doubt know it better than I.

At odd times I am reading Scott's "Marmion," Mother read it long ago and spoke of liking it so well. It is a odd Scottish tale.

We will have lots of apples this year, some plums too. The apples are fairly good, not worm-tainted.

I will write to you again in October.

I wish you all the success you care to hope for, and courage for trying, positions and all good things.

So with love to you and a "good health," I close for this time.
Your sister Amy.
