The attendance is gradually increasing, especially in the preparatory department, which creates a demand for more recitatin rooms, more furniture, more fuel and more instructors. Until better facilities are afforded in the public schools of the State, or preparatory institutions are established, the Regents see no way of dispensing with the Latin School or preparatory department, even if it were deemed advisable to do so. A large proportion of the students attending the University for preparatory instruction are in the preparatory department-young men and women-who do not expect to complete a course of study, but avail themselves of the only opportunity the State now affords them of pursuing the branches not taught in the public schools.
