BARBERS SEND SHEARS TO VIETNAM SEABEES
An urgent plea for tonsorial help, from a member of an isolated U.S.
Navy Seabee Division working with the South Vietnam Navy at Cat-Lo, was
promptly ansered by Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Barber's Local 541 under leadership of Ray Thayer, President, and Vito Coloninno, Secretary-Treasurer.
Seabee Steelworker Third Class J.M. (Sonny) Martin, son of Mrs. Mary
Martin, of Fort Lauderdale, issued the plea for a set of barber's instruments
needed badly for his division, whose members had been "clipped" by local
South Vietnam barbers.
There was also the possibility, under existing conditions, that a
Viet Cong might take over as barber and clip a throat or two!
Mrs. Martin contacted local Seabee, EOC C.H. Timothy, USNRTC, who in
turn called Vito, a master barber. The latter quickly rallied to the
cause with a brand new set of top notch "tools".
American opinion at Cat-Lo is that Vito, a "Can Do!" man, is "real
Seabee material".
Meanwhile, Martin recently returned from Vietnam, spent a short leave
with his mother, then returned to Vietnam for his second tour.
Martin plans to rejoin his local Seabee Reserve Division 6-13, USNRTC
Miami, upon completion of his Vietnam tour extension in January.
Martin's address is: ACB 1 Det. Delta, NSA Detachment, Cat-Lo FPO
San Francisco, California 96622.
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Navy Seabees; the 100th
of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action;
and the 125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (formerly Bureau
of Yards and Docks).
