Dear Mr. Blau:
My apologies for the delay in answering your letter of November 1,
and in sending you one of your requested photo-articles.
As you may have heard, Jim Pickerell and his wife had departed from
Saigon and this has caused some re-arrangement in getting good photos. His
business was purchased by a group of photo-oriented American newsmen and they
appear capable of filling the vacuum. This photo group and myself are
therefore sending you the Chieu Hoi article, about the Communist defectors,
which I hope will be of some use to you.
The Saigon bar story you mention is almost impossible to photograph,
unless it is staged; the bar girls don't like their photos taken--and neither
do the American GI's. Jim tried on several occasions to get this story, but
failed. Likewise, the opposition Buddhist leaders have during the past
months faded into the woodwork, rejecting journalist's requests to interview
them. I suspect that in the coming months they'll once again spearhead a
few demonstrations and agitation, at which time we'll try to get them
for your story.
I have received my Korean photos from you; sorry that they are
not of better quality-but I agree with your judgment on them.
In the event there are any payments for my story, could you arrange
to have mine transferred to: Beverly Deepe, The Chartered Bank, Saigon,
Vietnam. The Vietnamese postal system is too haphazard to venture sending
checks through it.
My thanks and best regards,
sincerely yours,
(Miss) Beverly Deepe
