Dak To battle diagrams
Description
Original caption: "Dak To is a small Vietnamese village in the Central Highland Province of Kontum. It is garrisoned by Vietnamese Army units and elements of the U.S. Special Forces-trained Civilian Irregular Defense Group. The Battle for Dak To started with a minor action on 3 Nov. involving a company of the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. As the contact developed on the 4th and 5th, it become apparent that a large enemy force was operating in the Dak To area. This assumption was borne out during the ensuing week as U.S. forces engaged the enemy in several significant actions. Other U.S. ground forces involved are shown on the attached photograph which depicts the major actions in which there units were involved. Twelve days of action in the vicinity of Dak To have resulted in: 635 enemy killed, 136 weapons taken, 96 U.S. fatalities, 498 U.S. wounded, about 50% of whom have already returned to duty. U.S. ground elements were supported by: 565 U.S. Air Force tactical air sorties, 10 U.S. Air Force B-52 Missions, 894 Army armed helicopter sorties, more than 43,000 rounds of artillery fire." Cartoony drawings explaining a battle near Dak To from Nov. 4th to 11th. The battle includes ARVN troops, the US Army, US air power and B-52s (probably from the Air Force), and the "enemy" (probably Viet Cong).
