NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE
AT THE TRIBUNE'S SAIGON GHQ: TIME OUT FOR A CAMERA SMILE
"This picture was taken just outside Bev's
house--which is also the Herald Tribune office
in Saigon--following a luncheon she had given
for Si Freidin who was here for 10 days.'
So wrote ex-Tribune photographer Jill Krementz
to our pix man Ira Rosenberg.
Jill, busy at war-photographing, mostly out-
side Saigon, is back there again after 3
weeks' vacation in Athens. She's the gal at
left, above. Next to her: Pham Xuan An,
special Tribune correspondent...freelancer
Frankie Fitzgerald who has contributed to
NEW YORK Magazine...Executive Editor, Foreign
VOL. 29
News, Si Freidin... and hostess Beverly Deep
special correspondent for the Tribune. Whit
House correspondent Douglas Kiker didn't
quite make the party. He was with Vice Pre
Humphrey's Far Eastern tour at the time.
Wrote our man Si, who has since returned to
his London base (see Saturday's editorial
page): "Asians, in political coats of many
colors, don't want us to get out of Viet Na
Their stark reasons for saying so are worth
of attention in any Congressional debate".
and worth checking, if you missed last

HOW TO BE A SPACEMAN
HT TV and Radio Editor Dick Doan (below) look-
ing duly apprehensive, receives last-minute
instructions from American Broadcasting
Company's Science Editor Jules Bergman on use
of device--a space-walker--which the Air Force
uses to teach astronauts how to propel them-
selves in weightless-space. The device floats
on a cushion of air. Though the astronauts
didn't quite make it all the way in Gemini 8,
Dick can now give you the low-down on life
among the higher-ups.

PERSONAL
Congratulations to Dick Lavino (7th Floor
Mail Room) and his wife Rose on the birth of
their first, Denise Marie, 7 lbs. 10 oz.,
on February 15. Incidentally, when baby
Denise is dressed up, she wears her lovely
gold locket and chain--gift of Trib friends
who also started her off on a financial
career with a $50 savings bond.
A few Fridays ago Mimi McCabe of the Science
Department was guest of honor at a farewell
luncheon given by Trib friends at Artist
& Writers. Mimi left Editorial to join the
weekly, Medical World News, as a copy editor.
Camille Duhe, former Trib writer on home
decoration, has joined Vogue as editor of the
magazine's new feature "Men in Vogue".
Caroline Windisch-Graetz of Women's Features
has gone to Harper's Bazaar as editor of the
Fashion Independents department.

joined the Washington Bureau in February,
coming from Washington's Congressional
Quarterly, where he was Committee Editor and
Senior Writer, specializing in Congressional
affairs and defense matters. Before working
on the Quarterly, correspondent Hamilton
taught English at Brevard Junior College, in
North Carolina. He graduated Magna Cum Laude
from Harvard in '59 and received a master's
in English Literature from Harvard in '61.
He will be covering the Pentagon and related
stories.
SUGAR, SPICE, COFFEE... AND GAVEL
Judge Isabel McGovern, perchance? Not a
chance. The above-pictured gavel-in-hand per-
formance of our Isabel, of Women's Features,
came as a completely unrehearsed surprise to
her.
When she went to cover the Open-House
put on by the New York Coffee and Sugar Ex-
change for food editors of radio, TV, news-
papers and magazines, the names of all
editors were put into a bowl, Isabel's was
drawn and to her went the special honor of
open-sesame-ing the Open House.
The Grand Opening took place at the Exchange,
79 Pine Street, on February 25.
Rx: CHEERS FOR OUR FAVORITE R. N.
T
Grateful patients feted Herald Tribune nurse
Miss Edna Meckes at luncheon today (Friday,
April 10) at the Artist & Writers' Round
Table. The theme was "Thank you, Miss Meckes
for curing our headaches over the years, so
here's 1,000 aspirins (in a Steuben glass
bowl) to refill the medicine chest."
