Description

Original caption: "Smoke billows from a North Vietnamese train attacked by Seventh Fleet Aircraft from the carrier, USS Midway, May 4 in what a Seventh Fleet spokesman said was probably the most successful armed reconnaissance mission flown to date by naval aircraft over Vietnam. Twenty railroad cars and two locomotives were destroyed and left smoking. The train, headed southward was stopped by downed bridges over North Vietnam Tuesday after conducting three days of in country attacks against Viet Cong concentrations in South Vietnam. Some twelve aircrafts, including A-4 Skyhawks and F-8 Crusaders, participated in the attack, hitting the train with 250 pound bombs, five inch zuni rockets and 20mm gunfire." Aerial photo of a bombed train in a rural area, with a black cloud of smoke rising from it.
