Kosygin in Hanoi-' Viet Red Attacks Kill 8 Americans
By Beverly Deepe
Of The Herald Tribune Stal/

SAIGON.
Eight U. S. servicemen were killed and at least 62
wounded early today when Viet Cong guerr!llas launched
a two-pronged attack on two big American compounds at
Ple!ku, 220 miles north of Saigon.
·
At least seven aircraft-one U. S. Army Caribou transport and six turbojet helicopters-were destroyed !n the
15-minute assault, the most damaging against U. s. forces
since the Viet Nam war started. Three other planes and
11 helicopters were damaged.
U, S. milltary officials said the Viet Cong, backed
by mortars, struck at 2 a. rm. while most of the Americans
were sleeping. The assault was reminiscent of .t he Nov. 1
attack on Bien Hoa Air Base, 19 miles northeast of Saigon,

when four Americans were killed, 20 wounded and six
B-57 bombers destroyed.
The attack came only 14 hours after Soviet Premier
Alexei N. Kosygin arrived in North Viet Nam . It was
the first major Viet Cong offensive following a week-long
cease-fire called by the Communist rebel's because of a
lunar New Year holiday.
U. S. military spokesmen said the heavier a,ttack came
at Camp Holloway-a compound for U. S. helicopter crews
at Pleiku, named after the first American helicopter
crewman killed there three years ago. Following up a
mortar attack with a ground probe, the Viet Cong killed
seven Americans and wounded 48.
It was not immediately known whether the Viet
Cong actually penetrated the airport compound.
At the same time, the Viet Cong mounted an assault
, with rifle grenades and .57-millimeter recoilless rifles

against the U. S. advisory detachment to the Vietnamese
Second Army headquarters in Pleiku. One American
was killed and 14 wounded in this assault.
The Pleiku casualties brought to 385 the number of
Americans killed in South Viet Nam since Jan. 1, 1961. In
addition, about 1,700 have been wounded, 12 are listed as
missing, and lS are held captive by the Communists.
Nearly 1,000 Americans are stationed with the two big
detachments at Pleiku, a sprawling mountain town of
100,000 which Is the military center of opetatlons for the
whole plateau area. This plateau comprises about one-half
of South Viet Nam's land area.
The main American detachment of advisers Just outside the town commands an open view in almost all directions. The surrounding topsoil Is eroded and ·sparsely overgrown. But the Viet Cong apparently were able to sneak
within striking distance without being discovered. The on-

slaught resulted in the largest number or American casualties at one time in South Viet Nam.
Initial reports did not indicate the Viet Cong losses.
The buildings in the two U. S. encampments, which
are about two miles apart, are mostly one-story concrete
houses. They are surrounded by barbed wire and are
guarded, but no heavy fortifications have been built.
Last year guerrillas attacked a similar, but smaller,
American detachment at Kontum, 30 miles north of Plelku,
and destroyed one of the main buildings. No Americans
were killed in that attack and two of the Vie~ Cong were
killed by a U. S. sentry.
The Viet Cong also launched a mortar attack yesterday on oil-storage tanks in Tuy Hoa, a coastal city
240 miles northeast of Saigon, and destroyed a large
quantity of fuel, a U. S. spokesman said. No American
casualties were reported.
