CASH AWARD FOR SEABEE
In the Navy,as in civilian life, a beneficial suggestion can mean e x tra
cash for th e person who submits an idea or suggestion that improves worki n g
conditions, d evis es b e tter procedures for work, or improves health conditions .
Such wa s the case rec e ntly when Seabee Builder Third Class Joseph E.
Marone, son of Mr. a nd Mrs. Joseph N. Marone of Hawthorne, N. J., wa s pr e sented with a $50 check for his beneficial suggestion.
Attached to u. S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FOUR on dep l oyment to Danang, Republic of Vietnam, Seabee Marone, while working with timber tr e ated with cr eosot e, saw th a t ma ny of the men, including hims elf, were
b e ing burned by th e oily substance which ran quit e freely out of the wood
in the hot, tropical sun. The creosote would cause severe burns a n d the men
wou ld have ·to change their jobs for a time until the burns healed and they
c ould go back to handling the timbers. Even wea ring gloves and long sleeve
shirts did not provide complete safe ty.
Several diff ~r e nt burn ointments were tried by thes e men with inef f ec tive or short lived results. Seabee Marone d ec ided to ask the Nucl ear,
Biologica l and Chemical Warfare Officer of MCB-4 if th ey could experiment
with an ointment p acked in NBC Warfare kits which is us ed for s evere ch emical burns. The NBC Warfare Off ic er ag r eed, a nd after testing the ointment,
"M-5" as it is known, fo r a month, it was found that if th e Seabees applied
the ointment prior to working with the timb e rs, they could continue working
withou~ the s erious burns they h a d been getting. Also, it wa s found that
when a burn was treated with this ointment it h ealed mor e rapid_ly and ther e
was less pain.
The use of the ointm e nt by MCB-4 was e ndors e d by th e Battalion's Medical Officer and th e r e has been a notica bl e increase in productive man hours
by those Seabees who must work with th e creosote coated timbers, thanks to
Seabee Maron e ' s benefici a l suggestion.
