VIETNAM OLYMPIC GAMES STAR NAVY SEABEES
Navy Seabees at Phu Bai Combat Base, South Vietnam recently joined
Marines, soldiers and Vietnamese youths in staging the Rue Olympic Games.
For the 21-man Seabee contingent, who are actively involved in a
variety of construction tasks supporting the Third Marine Division combat
and pacification operations, near the "Imperial City" of Rue, the games
provided a welcome relief from workday routines. It ~lso allowed them
to indulge their appetites for competition in the vigorously contested
three day series of track and field events, soccer and volleyball matches.
In the final tallying of the Olympiad, the Seabees, who are members of
Mobile Construction Battalion SIXTY-TWO, did very well, winning one first,
two second and seven thir-0 place medals in track and field contests. In
all events in which they participated, the MCB-62 athletes competed heartily and in the sportsmanlike spirit in which the Hue Games were held.
Medals were awarded as follows to the Seabees:
16 lb. Shotput, first place, Builder (Light) Third Class C.G. Stineman,
40 feet, 5\ inches; second place, Equipment Operator (Construction Equipment) Third Class J.R. Farrell, 36 feet, 3 3/4 inches; Broad Jump, third
place, Builder (Concrete) Third Class D.R. Balch, 5,60 meters; High Jump,
third place, Constructionman G. c. Williams, 5 feet, 7 inches; 40~ Meter
Relay, third place, LTJG R.G. Schneider, Construction Electrician (Wiring)
Third Class J.L. Sawyer, Constructionmen R. Bonilla and K. w. Penick.
Discus, second place, Constructionman R.D. Harvey, 29 meters;
5,000 Meters, third place, Construction Electrician (Telephone) Second
Class R .E. Dunn.
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Navy Seabees; the 100th
of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action;
and the 125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (formerly Bureau
of Yards and Docks).
