SEABEE SAVES DROWNING VIETNAM BUDDY
Navy training and a quick-acting Seabee Hospital Corpsman saved the life
of a friend recently on the beach of Chu Lai, South Vietnam.
Dick Roberts, a Seabee Hospital Corpsman with Seabee Battalion 71, while
swinnning recently gave aid to a stricken Seabee pulled from the waters of ~he
,'

South China Sea.

Seabee Construction Electrician J. W. Laster had been overcome

by heavy surf and was pulled ashore by friends.
Roberts, a Seabee Hospital Corpsman with over six years of Naval service,
rushed to the stricken man and innnediately began administrating mouth-to-mouth
respiration.
Directing his fellow Seabees to summon medical aid and an ambulance,
Roberts displayed outstanding leadership, quick thinking and connnand of the
situation. The 25-year-old sailor continued to administer mouth-to-mouth
respiration until Laster arrived at the hospital.
For his action, Seabee Roberts and the two other seabees who aided in the
rescue, were presented Letters of Connnendation by Connnander R.D. Coughlin,
Battalion 7l's connnanding officer.
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U. S. Navy Seabees; the 100th
of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action;
and the 125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Connnand (formerly Bureau
of Yards and Docks).
