NAVY CIVIL ENGINEERS DIRECT HOSPITAL CONSTRUCTION FOR VIETNAMESE
The Naval Facilities Engineering Command will supervise construction
of nine "impact hospitals" to aid the South Vietnamese people at a building
cost of $4 million.
Called "impact hospitals" because they will be located to provide immediate relief where medical help is most needed, the buildings will be part
of the U. S. Agency for International Development ''s new Vietnamese health
ex-p ans fon program.
Contracts for the program's first two hospitals were slf.gned recently
in Saigon by the contractors (Korean and South Vietnamese firms) and Captain
J. L. Burke, CEC, USN, deputy officer in charge of construction for the
Republic of Vietnam. __ Present was Rear Admiral William M. Heaman, commander,
Pacific Division, NAVFAC.
One hospital, at Vi Thanh, will have an operating room, maternity unit,
emergency treatment room, kitchen, laundry, and two wards of 70 beds ea.ch.
The other, at Chau Phu, is to be built around existing wards and will have
operating and emergency treatment rooms, kitchen and laundry.
Both hospitals are to be finished by December at a cost of about $450,000
apiece. Each will have administrative offices and water and power capabilitie~.
Contracts for the remaining seven hospitals are expected to be awarded
by September. They will be located at: Bong Son, Bao Loe, Son Be, Hau Bon,
Ham Tan, Cao Lanh, and Gia Nghia.
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U. s. Navy Seabees; the 100th
of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action;
and the 125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Connnand (formerly Bureau
of Yards and Docks).
