SEABEES IN VIETNAM LAUNCH OPERATION PORKER
If Navy Seabees are successful, a South Vietnam village will be sending
bigger pigs to market.
This effort toward heftier hogs started when members of Naval Mobile
Construction Battalion SIXTY-TWO visited Thuy Chau village on their regular
civic action mission. While aiding the villagers, the Seabee chaplain,
medical doctor and dentist couldn't help but notice the scrawny appearance
of the village's main meat supply, namely the pigs which were running about
on the hoof.
Believing that something could be done to improve the size of the puny
pigs the energetic Seabees took the matter up with Corporal Bill Taylor, Third
Marine Division agricultural adviser.
Through him it was learned that American pigs could be obtained from
Saigon and interbred with local pigs. The proposal was greeted with great
enthusiasm by the area's village and hamlet chiefs and proper steps were taken
to obtain the paunchy pigs.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Bill Bohart, Seabee Medical Officer, had been doing
a little more looking around the village, where he discovered a very undesira-
ble situation regarding people and pigs. It seems that most local pigs were
kept inside each family's dwelling, away from sunlight and in conditions re-
garded by the doctor as unsatisfactory for proper breeding.
Worse, having the swine quartered in the dwelling created an environment
injurious to the health of the villagers. For a two-fold purpose, villagers
were persuaded to build outside pens and Seabees contributed scrap lumber for
the purpose.
At last, all was in readiness at the village, but "red tape" was holding
things up in Saigon. Finally, Corporal Taylor was flown to the capital city,
where he pried the porkers loose.

Six pudgy pigs, including a pure bred American Yorkshire boar, were
distributed among village farmers. Each recipient signed an agreement to
provide suitable housing and care for the pigs and to return half of each
first litter for distribution to other families in the Thuy Chau area.
The Seabees see the project as a significant step in providing the
Vietnamese villagers with the means and knowledge to better themselves.

It is as important, the busy Seabees of Battalion SIXTY-TWO realize,
as the combat and construction functions they perform daily on the war front.
