SEABEE SUNDAY IN VIETNAM
Waves
DA NANG--The sun was shining brilliantly in the clear blue sky.
lapped gently at the sandy shore. The smell of charcoal grilled steaks and
hot dogs permeated the air. Happy voices and laughter combined to form a
medley of good fellowship.
This scene could have taken place almost anywhere in the world, perhaps
close to your home or even in your backyard. It is a little surprising,
however, to learn this outing occurred in Da Nang East, Vietnam.
The men of Navy Seabee Battalion FIVE proposed the cookout to show their
appreciation to Seabee Chaplain S. L. Muccilli. The Chaplain was gracious
enough to celebrate Catholic Mass for the men at Camp Adenir since October,
1966.
When the Sisters of the order of the Sacred Heart were invited to attend
they were receptive to the idea and offered the beach adjacent to their hos-
pital, orphanage and school buildings as a possible location for the picnic.
The site was found suitable and Chaplain Muccilli was invited, but not told
he was to be guest of honor.
When the big day arrived, Chaplain Muccilli was informed early in the
festivities that the outing was given in his honor. He was surprised and
pleased by the gesture. Commander E. J. Williams, Jr., Seabee Battalion
FIVE's Commanding Officer, presented the Chaplain with an engraved desk pen
set from the men of the Battalion. Also a gift of 16,000 piasters (about
$200) was presented to the Sacred Heart Orphanage and Hospital in the Chap-
lain's name.

The Seabee enlisted men in attendance were fascinated by the songs,
folkdances and games that the Vietnamese students tried to teach them.
The men participated in numerous games, one of which was a Vietnamese
version of the game American children call "blind man's bluff."
To the amusement of the entire gathering, one of the blindfolded
participants located a dog that was in the area thinking it to be his op-
ponent. Even a group of Marines patroling in the area stopped briefly to
share in the merryment.
The afternoon's gaiety will be preserved for a long time for many of
the Sisters and students, as one of the Seabees took numerous instant
photographs and gave then to the guests.
