SEABEES BUILD MAMMOTH OIL TANKS
Navy Seabees are erecting five huge bolted steel petroleum tanks
at Chu Lai, South Vietnam.
Seabee crews from Naval Mobile Construction Battalions EIGHT and
SEVENTY ONE are working on the project.
Each tank is 400-feet in diameter and is constructed of curved
steel plates, called "staves."
These are bolted into place by hand.
When completed, each tank will store over 20,000 barrels of aviation
jet fuel. The fuel will be used by fighter-bombers of Marine Air Groups 12 and
13, which are stationed on the Seabee-built airstrip at Chu Lai.,
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U. S. Navy Seabees; the 100th of
the Navy Civil Engineer Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action%; and the
125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (formerly Bureau of Yards and
Docks).
