NAVY SEABEES AID IN BUILDING MASSIVE VIETNAM COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
Navy Seabees of U. S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion EIGHT have
recently completed construction of a relay station which will form one
of 52 links in a massive communications system covering the Republic of
Vietnam and neighboring Thailand.
Built at Chu Lai, South Vietnam, the newest complex consists of a generator
building, dish antennas, an electronic equipment building, a warehouse and a well.
It will link up with the Da Nang relay station, 52 miles to the north.
The project was a joint effort by MCB-EIGHT and Page Electronics. The
former handled the heavy construction while the latter performed the necessary
electrical and mechanical work.
Briefly, the network utilizes a system of tropo scattered waves and
microwave links on a line of sight basis enabling participants to communicate
clearly and concisely over thousands of square miles. It is expected to vastly
improve present communications, according to Sergeant Ron Nagi, USA, Quality
Control Inspector for the facility.
Page Communications of Washington D. C., under the supervision of U. S.
Army Strategic Communication Command of Southeast Asia, is the contractor
for the entire project.
Known as the Integrated Wideband Communciation System (IWCS), the
network is scheduled for completion within two years. It will provide an
instant hook-up between commanders in the field and their superiors at
key centers of military operations.
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U. S. Navy Seabees; the 100th
of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action;
and the 125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (formerly Bureau of
Yards and Docks).
