NAVY SEABEES PLUS VIETNAMESE ORPHANS EQUAL 100-POUND POPSICKLE
Navy Seabees of Mobile Construction Battalion SIXTY-TWO recently
tried their luck with what is becoming a tradition among the Navy's
construction men in Vietnam--they turned out a giant-size popsickle
for the children of a nearby orphanage.
Using one ice plant at Camp Campbell, Seabee stronghold at Phu Bai
near the historic Vietnamese city of Hue, the 100-pound popsickle was
manufactured with typical Seabee ingenuity.
The Seabees flavored a 13 gallon "ice cube tray", normally used
to freeze plain water into ice, with 26 packs of pre-sweetened grape flavoring.
A four foot long, two-by-two-inch "stick" was frozen into the popsickle
to create the final product.
The popsickle survived a three mile truck ride, but perished quickly
under the knife of Seabee Chaplain Carl W. Erickson who served the swarm
of surprised, delighted youngsters.
Although the day was rainy and cool, the popsickle disappeared into the
stomachs of 40 children, three Catholic nuns and four Seabees in short order.
Except, of course, the portion that escaped from wet fingers to disappear
into the sand of the Than Phu Orphanage's courtyard.
This is not the first pop-sized popsickle to come out of Camp Campbell's
ice plant. Mobile Construction Battalion SEVEN, previously based at Phu Bai,
had also manufactured them.
The future--if the popularity of this the current popsickle is any
indication--should bring still more.
1967 marks the 25th anniversary of the U. S. Navy Seabees; the 100th
of the Navy Civil Engineers Corps whose officers lead the Seabees in action;
and the 125th of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (formerly Bureau
of Yards and Docks).

the orphanage youngsters. The Seabees made the popsickle in the ice

the orphanage.
