Dear Mr. Nichols:

How does a Vietnamese mother gude her children through the ordeals
of her country? What budgeting methods does a Malayan housewife use to
stretch her husband's income of $130 a month? How does Mrs. Sirimauo
Bandaranaike of Ceylon perform her duties as the world's only female
prime minister?
These are themes for a 1,500-word monthly feature, entitled
"Homemakers Around The World," I would like to write for Good Housekeeping.
The features, covering a different country each month, could be of three
distinct types. One is to visit "the average", unknown homemaker.
The second
is to interview the "big names"--such as Queen Sirikit of Thailand, considered to
be one of the world's most beautiful royalty. The third would be articles
of special interest to women, such as visiting a Thai silk factory or
reporting on a Hindu wedding ceremony.
Thus far on my round-the-world trip, have interviewed Mrs. Pak
Chung-Hi and Mrs. Chang Do-Young several days after their husbands engineered
the South Korean military coup d'etat. I have talked with young Japanese
housewives who combined in their new homes traditional Japanese and Western
desings. Associated Press Newsfeatures and the Christian Science Monitor
have bought articles from me on this trip.
I will soon be traveling across Southeast Asia from Saigon to
I would then choose
India, stopping in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.
between going westward through the Middle East and Afric@or northward
to Outer Mongolia and the Soviet Union.

Thank you for your consideration of this query.
Sincerely yours,
(Miss) Beverly Deepe
