The Cather GardenWilla Cather, Nebraska author and distinguished alumna of the University of Nebraska, portrayed in her writing the natural splendor of the Great Plains. The Cather Carden was first conceived in 1973, the centennial year of Miss Cather's birth, in recognition of her rich contribution to the heritage of Nebraska. Located west of Love Library North where it catches the last rays of the setting sun, the Garden symbolizes the traditions of the University of Nebraska, its alumni, and its former students. The Garden is distinguished by the most familiar of the Nebraska trees and flowers. A grove of birch trees reach to the northwest corner with Black Hills spruce to the north. The cottonwood trees, the only ones on City Campus, and a garden of native roses bordering Burnett Hall were especially well known to Miss Cather. The dedication plaque is placed where the walkways through the Garden cross.
