UNL Alumni Award Journal
Journal Brief
YEAR: 2018
START DATE: April 19, 2018
END DATE: April 22, 2018
Commemoration of Alumni Achievement Awards weekend at the University of Nebraska Lincoln in April of 2018. A number of old friends said they’d like to be there and came. Jody Shields, Debby Knotts, Shelley Thornton from the art department. Candy Dickenson Becher from childhood in Columbus. Sandra Johnson from early days at the University and still a close friend. Jane Johnson, a friend I met through Kelly. Shelley’s children and their significant others at that time: Phoebe Little and Nate Luginbill and Kirby Little and Jihan Najjar. (Kirby and Jihan have since married and separated.) Gretchen Dykstra flew in from New York. My husband, Kelly Nash. Due to the highly unusual chance that we’d ever gather again in this group I hired a photographer to document us – David Dale. Some photos were taken on a Sunday afternoon at the store at 705 Y St. - prior to the awards banquet. I asked everyone to wear black or red or white or cream. Photos of me - then (UNL art student) and now. Visuals are a combination of photos taken that weekend, plus photos from my archive of photos - print and digital. Some photos taken on Sunday April 22, 2018 are by Jody Shields. Includes photos from workshop done with UNL students in the art department. Shelley Thornton and Debby Knotts assisted.
Blank handmade book made by Terri Lenoir at Paper Arts in Dallas. Alumni Achievement weekend at UNL. I felt honored. Prior to hip surgery and in constant, chronic pain, using cane. Documentation of friends who came for the weekend - current photos and photos from our past.
Time of slowed down reflection and choice making after completion of the American LOVE Project.
We were in the middle of plans to begin Piece 10. We’d invested a lot of planning, strategizing, meetings in doing the piece with teachers and students at Momentous Institute, on a site at their school. It seemed like the perfect partnership, and they suddenly pulled out due to a change in plans for land use. Another in a series of 29 Pieces gut punches.
