- The open journal contains two facing pages with a combination of photographs, artwork, and handwritten text. The left page features a large, detailed pink flower against a soft pink background, partially concealing a black and white photograph of a person's face at the top. Below the flower is a black and white photograph of a person sitting with a dog on the steps of a white wooden house. The right page has another black and white cut-out photograph of the person in a white t-shirt crouching beside the same dog, overlaid on a pink paper background. Handwritten on white strips over this image are the words "Pudgie. 1964. I was 13. The year he was killed." There’s a handwritten date "2.29.16" at the bottom right corner of the page. Lined notebook paper is visible beneath these elements on both pages.
